discovering my "why"
discovering my "why"
My journey into birth work began as many often do, after witnessing birth for the first time. I already had my first birth experience when I had the honor of supporting a friend through hers’ back in 2009. That was when I first began hearing the call. The next step I took was entering nursing school, which I did with the intentions pursuing a career as a Certified Nurse Midwife. My first position as a nurse was in an OBGYN outpatient facility. I didn't know at the time, but my naivety and willingness to ingest the narrative from the medical system would only fuel my desire to dismantle and rebuild a new, women centered paradigm years later. Over the next eleven years I would build my knowledge, technical skills and relationships with women in invaluable ways. In 2019 I landed what I saw at the time as my dream job in outpatient OB triage. Soon after I began to feel a shift from within me. Something was not right here. What was considered to be very normal and common within the walls of this facility was in fact extremely unnatural. And the worst part to me was that so many women didn’t seem to realize or care. They didn’t have the slightest awareness of the function let alone the power of their bodies. When the world went through its major shift in 2020 the control and panic that ensued throughout this fear based system became unbearable. By September of 2021 I left the medical field for good and have not looked back.
It is my professional and personal experiences within the medical system that has both shaped me into who I am today and set me on this path of independent birth work. I have witnessed countless women over the years, myself included, hand their power over to a medical professional and I have both seen and felt the consequences of this on a deep, life altering level. On top of this, through out our pregnancies, births and postpartum times we are often overlooked, ignored, brushed off and even mocked by some within the "standard of care" that is Obstetrics - and even by our community at times.
The fact is that we live in a culture that does not listen to women when their capable bodies tell them something.
I believe that women have the right to be heard, held and healed. Heard throughout their pregnancies, held throughout their births and healed during the fourth trimester.
We have the right to know ALL of our options when it comes to making decisions that impact us and our babies and we have the right to disagree and deny recommendations in which we are not aligned.
We are lucky to live in this day and age where we have access to such great medical resources when they are needed. The question is "do we know when they are really needed?".
And the real issue, is that women have been told how to birth for so long that we no longer possess the accountability and responsibility needed to make our own decisions. We've lost our voices. And that's a power that needs to be taken back.
If you are looking for a supportive Guide throughout this incredibly transformative time - that can offer you in depth education from “both sides of the coin” in order for you to truly make informed decisions, a companion to hold space for you emotionally, mentally and spiritually and a sister to offer hands on physical support if and when you need it, I would love the opportunity to connect with you.
